Coastal Courtyard
Materials and built form gesture out to the sea views and offer a strong counterpoint to the rolling contour of this dune-top site. Low maintenance and unfussy plants and materials reflect the essence of relaxed sea-side living. Staggered Macrocarpa louver screens provide a sense of mystery on arrival, buffer winds and offer privacy and a rich textural backdrop to the courtyard area. Incorporating several native coastal species, this garden also features a self-sown yellow flowering Pohutukawa tree (Metrosideros excelsa var. Aurea), a descendant from a pair discovered in the 1940s on Motiti Island which sits several kilometres directly out from the site.
